Australia beat Sri Lanka easily in the opening match by 116 runs. The one sided victory has raised the spectre of a dull, uncompetitive VB series, if it just becomes a two horse race between Australia and Sri Lanka.

With Sanath Jayasuriya out of the team through injury, Sri Lanka do not appear to have the skills and experience to provide explosive starts at the beginning of their innings. The bowling has looked weak too, with even Murlitharan being hit for a lot of runs. Vaas was also off colour leading to the Australian batsmen hitting up 318 off their 50 overs.
