The West Indian captain Ramnaresh Sarwan won the toss and put England into bat on the first day of the first Test match played at Lords.

The left handed pair of Alistair Cook and Andrew Strauss starred in an opening partnership of 88, before Strauss fell for 33. Soon after Owais Shah was out for 6. Both wickets went to Daren Powell.

At the time of this post, England were 156 for 2, off 40 overs, so fairly brisk progress in terms of run rate. Cook was unbeaten on 81 and that man Kevin Pietersen was just getting into his groove on 25 with 4 boundaries.

In one of the most thrilling matches at the World Cup this year, Sri Lanka beat England in a crucial Super Eights match by two runs.

With this win Sri Lanka are now very close to making the semi finals of the World Cup, while England are probably on their way out. They have to play Australia next and given the current form of the Australians it is hard to see them getting through.

Kevin Pietersen scored 58 for England, chasing down Sri Lanka’s score of 235. He was outfoxed by Muttiah Muralitharan. Jayasuriya and Dilshan further restricted England during the middle overs.

Michael Vaughan’s batting slump continued, getting out cheaply at the top of the order.

A quick-fire seventh-wicket partnership of 87 between Ravi Bopara and Paul Nixon gave England an unexpected chance.

Nixon was eventually out for 42 in the penultimate over and England needed three off the last ball.

Bopara was dismissed off the last ball of the match for a gallant 52, leaving Sri Lanka the victors by 2 runs.

Sri Lanka have now joined co-leaders Australia and New Zealand on six points in the Super Eights standings, while England are behind fourth-placed South Africa on two.

England beat Ireland by 48 runs at the World Cup today.

However, it wasn’t an entirely convincing display. Winning the toss, England chose to bat scoring 266 for 7 in their 50 overs. The openers Ed Joyce and Michael Vaughan were both dismissed cheaply. Vaughan scoring a sumptous boundary before edging behind.

Vaughan probably needs to consider whether he should open or drop down to number 3.

Paul Collingwood was again the man for England, scoring 90 with three sixes before being run out.
Kevin Pietersen scored 48 and Andrew Flintoff 43, as England powered along to a reasonable, but not necessarily outstanding score.

Ireland scored 218 in reply in 48.1 overs. Andrew Flintoff took 3 wickets and Monty Panesar 2 wickets. Neil O’Brien was the top scorer for Ireland with 63.

So overall a win for England, but not convincing enough.

A fine allround display from Scott Styris, and an unbeaten stand of 138 with Jacob Oram, handed New Zealand the bragging rights, but more importantly the points, from the main clash in Group C. England were twice well placed, but three key middle-order batsmen fell within six balls, then Styris steadied the Kiwis after their top three had gone against the new ball and victory came with nine overs to spare.

England Scored 209 for 7 with Kevin Pietersen hitting 60, and wicket keeper Nixon contributing a value 42 not out. For New Zealand, that man Bond, Shane Bond took 2 for 19.

Sytris scored an invaluable 87 not out and Oram a typically barn storming display of calculated big hitting scoring 63 not out to lead New Zealand to a six wickets win, with nearly nine overs to spare.

England were in command at the end of Day 2 of the 2nd Test Match in Adelaide. At stumps Australia were 28 for 1, in reply to England’s total of 551 for 6 declared. Justin Langer was the man out, caught at slip by Kevin Pietersen, off a rising delivery from Andrew Flintoff.

Earlier in the day, Paul Collingwood scored a brilliant double century before being eventually caught behind off Stuart Clark for 206. Kevin Pietersen equalled his best Test score of 158, before he was run out by Ricky Ponting going for a short single.

The Australian bowlers toiled hard all day without much luck.

See the Cricinfo report on this below.

Cricinfo - Australia’s giants drop to their knees

England are now in the box seat, however Australia has not given up on winning the Test match.

“Make 700 and bowl them out for under 150 on the last day,” John Buchanan, the Australian coach told a news conference when asked about his team’s strategy.

“There’s still a win on offering, there’s three days to go, but we’re not in a position to dictate that right at the moment, but we first have to negotiate the new ball.

“Our job tomorrow is really to negotiate the new ball and once we do that, hopefully we’ll have a foundation partnership going, it minimises your risks.”

This is the never say die Aussie spirit coming out.

It will be very interesting to see how day 3 turns out, particularly this morning session.

Read more about this.

Ricky Ponting was emphatic that McGrath would not play unless he was 100% fit.

“We aren’t going to be able to go into the Test match [with McGrath] unless he’s 100 percent,” Ponting said. “It’s as simple as that. We have to rely on him getting right through the game at his best. With the team balance, we can’t afford to be carrying any bowlers whatsoever. Glenn has to be able to give me what I require of him through the course of the game, and if he can’t then a few more questions will be asked.”

Who can forget Vaughan’s phenomenal batting during the last tour of England to Australia? The way he took on Glenn McGrath and dominated the Australian bowlers was breath taking stuff.

If he is able to come in, we could be in for a really hard fought series.

As it is I think the series will still be much closer than what people think. Monty Panesar could be the dark horse. With a hot dry Australian summer in the offing, the pitches at Sydney, Adelaide and Melbourne could aid some spin and bounce.

Vaughan refuses to rule out Ashes return
Michael Vaughan has again indicated that he has not ruled out a return to the England side during the forthcoming Ashes series.
